Great essay! One point predates AI, but will become more important: "But that requires firms to think about jobs in a way that is more than a cost metric, which they don’t tend to do." Amen. I saw this in the extreme in my 40 years as an engineer and manager in high-tech R&D. The easy-to-measure gets funding and the hard-to-measure gets drip-fed or cut. Well staffed R&D, where I worked, get's throttled by underfunded HR, IT, admin support, tools, and office space which need to be thought of as force multipliers, not overhead. Last week a friend was lamenting that their management told everyone to use AI, but wouldn't fund the AI licenses. Some things never change.
