Not an expert in this subject, but I can't help but think that "interoperability" will be a major barrier, assuming that "gatekeepers" of each world will compete for a monopoly and the most users. I would also note that COVID has probably accelerated some movement into the Metaverse. For example, I've used Gather for networking at a conference that was made virtual, and it was really successful. Lastly, I would encourage anyone interested in the Metaverse to watch Ready Player One, which seems to me like one extreme of this spectrum.
