The depth of knowledge here is absolutely astonishing. I love the exploration of the second order effects we’re about to see.

And I agree, the worst casualty to come out of this fiasco is the death of trust in the American system. That will pay off in long term pain for years if not decades.

Great write-up! The tweets you cited with Casey Ames really put into perspective for me how damaging tariffs will be for businesses. It is unfathomable to think of the damages small business will face as well. Something I've thought about is that small businesses are the heart and soul of cities and communities. If they shut down then many places will become ghost-towns and lose their identity. It's something I've seen happen in my hometown the last several years. And so while tariffs will cause economic damages that you see on paper and in numbers, the societal and cultural damages can't be underestimated.

must to be tough to be a fin writer before trump makes his daily announcement.

now imagine if you had to deploy millions\billions in longterm capex for company survival.

It’s wonderful that you embed this reality into each post- “To say this will address the loneliness crisis or whatever completely misunderstands what’s rotten in our world. It’s the phones and a housing crisis”. It’s seems so clear and is always connected well to your idea of “vibes”- and clearly explains how they permeate into every aspect of American life, especially our economy. Glad you never stop reiterating this truth as it always provides an insightful lens.

This is a fantastic review of the current state of affairs, Kyla. You haven't, though, said anything about the risk to national security. Haven't we (we elected him) created a perfect opportunity for a major cyberattack?

Stay focused on long term investing. If you miss the 10 best days each year it kills your return. Time in beats timing the market.

"tariffs are paid by companies exporting to the US".

Exporters pay tariffs? Or importers?

Excellent and very in-depth! Making my students read about tariffs might make them look at this!

Also, tariffs are already off!?! And Donald Dump said they were always going to go away even though he and his undead army have been saying they are here to stay?!? I have whiplash.

Excellent post as expected. Columbia supplies the US with cut roses for Valentine's Day in addition to coffee. Chile provides out of season (US) fruit to us. Many other examples can be cited.

For one man's fight against Chinese IP theft, there is no better book to read than Beth Macy's "Factory Man." It covers the collapse of the US furniture industry and one man's fight against a Chinse furniture maker that pirated his company's design. Well worth reading.
